Scrotal and inguinoscrotal ultrasound with testicular Doppler ultrasound

Testicular and scrotal ultrasound in Casablanca

This ultrasound examines the testicles, the epididymides (small ducts attached to the testicles) and the scrotum using ultrasound, without X-rays. Doppler, almost always added, checks blood flow. The exam can extend to the groin crease. It is the usual exam for a lump, pain or swelling of the scrotum, in adults as well as children. It requires no preparation, and the doctor always compares each side with the other.

When is this exam needed?

  • Lump or hardening felt in a testicle.
  • Swollen or painful scrotum, after an injury or an infection.
  • Varicocele (dilated veins around the testicle) or infertility workup.
  • Undescended testicle or groin hernia in a child.
  • Hydrocele (fluid around the testicle) or a cyst to be monitored.
  • Follow-up after surgery of the scrotum or groin.

How the exam is done

You lie on your back, with a towel under the scrotum to support it and the penis lifted toward the abdomen. The doctor applies a gel and gently moves the probe over each side. They may ask you to bear down as if having a bowel movement, or to stand up, to reveal a varicocele.

Doppler, displayed in color on the screen, shows whether blood is flowing normally in each testicle, which is essential when there is pain. The doctor also measures the volume of the testicles, especially in an infertility workup. If the scrotum is painful, they adjust the pressure of the probe. At the end, you wipe off the gel, get dressed and leave with no special instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Can sudden pain wait?

No. Sudden pain in a testicle can be a sign of torsion, which requires very rapid surgical treatment. Go to the emergency room without delay.

Is the exam embarrassing?

It involves an intimate area, and feeling uncomfortable is normal. The doctor explains each step and uncovers only the area needed.

Is a lump always serious?

No, many are benign, such as epididymal cysts. However, a mass in the testicle itself must be investigated quickly with your doctor.

Why this exam for infertility?

A varicocele or an abnormality of the testicles can affect sperm quality. The ultrasound then complements the semen analysis requested by your doctor.

What is a varicocele?

It is a group of dilated veins around the testicle, most often on the left, similar to varicose veins. Often harmless, it is looked for mainly in case of discomfort or infertility; the doctor examines it while you stand and while you bear down.

Can ultrasound show a testicular tumor?

It detects a mass in the testicle very well and describes its appearance. It is not enough to confirm what the mass is: blood tests and the urologist's opinion complete the assessment.
