What is an MRI?
Magnetic resonance imaging uses a magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. Unlike a CT scan, it does not use X-rays.

What happens during an MRI
You lie comfortably on a table that slides into the ring of the machine. The exam is painless but can be noisy. You will be given hearing protection. It is essential to stay still while the images are being acquired.
Gadolinium injection
In some cases, an injection of contrast agent (gadolinium) may be needed to improve the visibility of certain structures. This injection is given into a vein and is generally well tolerated.
Contraindications and precautions
- Pacemaker or certain electronic implants
- Metal fragments in the eye
- Certain prostheses or clips that are not MRI compatible
- Insulin pump or glucose sensor (such as FreeStyle Libre): to be removed before the exam. Bring what you need to replace it or put it back afterwards.
- Current or possible pregnancy: please tell us. MRI is performed only if it is necessary, preferably after the first trimester, and without gadolinium unless absolutely necessary.
- Breastfeeding: please tell us. It is generally not necessary to stop breastfeeding after a gadolinium injection.
