Ultrasound of the neck and salivary glands (parotid and submandibular glands), with Doppler depending on the indication
Neck and salivary gland ultrasound in Casablanca
This ultrasound uses sound waves to examine the soft tissues of the neck: lymph nodes, masses or cysts, and the salivary glands (the parotid glands in front of the ears, the submandibular glands under the jaw). With no X-rays and no needle, it is also suitable for children. Doppler can show the blood supply of a lymph node. The exam shows whether a lump is fluid-filled or solid, as well as its size and outline. Areas hidden by bone or air, such as the back of the throat, are poorly seen: a CT scan or an MRI then takes over.

When is this exam needed?
- Lump or lymph node in the neck that persists.
- Swelling of a salivary gland, especially during meals.
- Suspected stone or infection of a salivary gland.
- Persistent dry mouth, in addition to other tests.
- Neck cyst present since childhood, in the middle or on the side of the neck.
- Monitoring of a known salivary gland lesion.
How the exam is done
You lie on your back and turn your head away from the area being examined. The probe, coated with gel, glides under the jaw, in front of the ear and along the neck, on both sides. Comparing the two sides helps to judge whether a gland or a lymph node has become larger.
For a salivary gland, the radiologist also follows its duct, looking for a stone or a dilation. If Doppler is useful, it is added during the exam and shows how blood flows in a mass or a lymph node. The pressure stays light, even on a swollen, tender gland. Once the gel is wiped off, you can eat, talk and return to your activities.
Preparation
- Remove necklaces, scarf and earrings.
- Wear a top with a wide neckline or one that is easy to move out of the way.
- Note how long the lump or swelling has been there, and whether it changes at mealtimes.
Fasting
You can eat and drink as usual.
Contrast injection
Nothing is injected.
Contraindications and precautions
- Ultrasound has no contraindication.
- Previous neck surgery or radiation therapy: tell us about it.
- Recent needle aspiration or biopsy of the neck: give its date, as a small hematoma can change the appearance of the tissues.
- Rapid swelling of the neck with difficulty swallowing or breathing: go to the emergency department without waiting for the exam.
Documents to bring
- Prescription from your doctor or ENT specialist
- ENT consultation report, if available

Frequently asked questions
Is the thyroid examined too?
It may be seen, but a detailed study requires a dedicated thyroid ultrasound, to be scheduled if your doctor prescribes it.
Is a visible lymph node a cause for concern?
Most often, no: a lymph node often becomes larger during an infection. The ultrasound describes its shape and structure to help your doctor decide on the next steps.
How does a salivary stone show up?
The stone appears as a very bright spot in the gland or in its duct, often with a shadow behind it. The radiologist specifies its size and position for your doctor.
Can a needle aspiration be done?
If a lesion needs to be analyzed, an ultrasound-guided needle aspiration may be offered. It is generally a separate procedure, decided with your doctor.
Is an ultrasound enough for a lymph node?
Often, yes: it can provide reassurance or lead to simple monitoring. If the appearance of the lymph node raises questions, your doctor may request a needle aspiration, a biopsy or a CT scan.
Can the exam be done during a flare-up of swelling?
Yes. Examining a swollen, painful gland actually helps to find the cause, whether a stone or an infection. The probe is placed gently on the tender area.
