Lateral oblique radiograph of the jaws, both sides
Jaw X-ray (lateral oblique view) in Casablanca
The lateral oblique jaw X-ray is an X-ray of the jaw taken from the side, at a slight angle, one side after the other. Each image shows one half of the jaw: the back teeth, the bone that holds them and the ascending ramus. A panoramic X-ray often replaces it. It remains useful for looking at a specific area from a different angle, at the request of the dentist or doctor. The exam is quick and uses a low dose of X-rays.

When is this exam needed?
- Looking for an impacted tooth, such as a wisdom tooth.
- Check after a blow to the jaw.
- Jaw pain or swelling to be investigated.
- Cyst or lesion of the jawbone to be visualized.
- Follow-up of a jaw fracture after treatment.
How the exam is done
After removing jewelry, glasses and any removable dental appliance, you sit or lie down, with your head tilted and turned toward the side being examined, your cheek against the holder. You are asked to stay still for a few seconds with your mouth closed.
The image is then repeated on the other side. The exam is painless. Between images, the team simply helps you turn your head the other way. The images appear as soon as they are taken, so their sharpness can be checked and an image can be retaken if you moved, before you leave.
Preparation
- Remove mouth piercings, earrings and removable dentures before the exam.
- Prepare a child by explaining that they will need to keep their head still for a moment.

This X-ray is done without any injection.

Frequently asked questions
Why two images?
Each image shows only one side of the jaw. Both sides are therefore X-rayed one after the other, which also makes it possible to compare them.
How is it different from a panoramic X-ray?
A panoramic X-ray shows all the teeth on one image. The lateral oblique view isolates one side, from a different angle; your dentist chooses the exam that is useful.
Is a protective apron used?
Depending on the exam, an apron or a shield may be offered to you. The beam is limited to the jaw and the X-ray dose is low.
Can a child have this exam?
Yes, if they can stay still for a few seconds. A parent can help them hold the position, following the team's protection instructions.
Can this X-ray be done urgently after a blow?
Yes, like other X-rays, it can be done urgently during opening hours. Call the center or message it on WhatsApp before coming.
